Coaching Afloat
A sailing boat provides a great environment for accelerated personal development.  You are a captive audience; there are no noisy engines - so you can talk to each other; there are periods of intense activity and long periods of peaceful inactivity.  You eat, sleep and drink, with the same people in a relatively small environment, where rapport and communication skills make the difference between intense bonding and simmering dislike. You have destinations to decide on and aim for; you have routes to plan; people to lead, involve, encourage, teach.  You have winds and currents, which can be with you or against you.  There are storms, calms, and everything in between.

This is why many leadership and teambuilding trainings are held on boats.  They are a marvellous metaphor for life.

NLP coaching afloat has all this and more.  You can hone your leadership and motivation skills. You can use the mind body connection to keep your food down when everyone else is throwing up. You can allow your unconscious mind to execute the perfect tack, or man overboard drill. You can plan the fastest route to the next journey point, taking into account a cross tide and a following wind.  What we do in addition to this is to use the whole experience as an exciting, fun and very effective conscious mind distraction.

Rather as Richard Bandler does with his intensive three day personal coachings, you come on an NLP Coaching Afloat experience with a wish list.  Problems you want to work on, issues you want to resolve.

We start with an onshore workshop where we get to know each other, and have an opportunity to clarify these personal or team goals - that is the main purpose of the onshore coaching session.  Depending on the level of knowledge of the participants we may also give some NLP skill training, particularly in state management and outcome setting.

We all know that having set an outcome - given the unconscious mind its marching orders - the best results are obtained by trusting, letting go and allowing the solution to emerge.  That is when we go sailing.

Once afloat there is plenty to occupy and distract the participants.  However, surprise, surprise, everything we do will in some way be relevant to resolving the problem and finding the solution.  Coaching is unobtrusive but constant, connections are made - deep after dinner conversations pop up from nowhere.  And there is a high degree of fulfilment as the conscious goals of getting the boat from a to b are achieved.

At the end of the trip we have a debrief workshop during which we review the original wish list and notice the solutions that have developed - always significant.  And log the actions that are needed to take the solutions forward.

The most popular timescale is two days with one or two nights aboard.  For the more adventurous, or those with more time, these floating retreats can last a week or more, with trips to Brittany, The Scilly Isles, or further afield.
